Karla J. McDermid, Ph.D., University of Hawaii at Manoa, Biology of marine plants. Dr. McDermid is an expert in the community dynamics of Hawaiian seaweeds. Her interests also include conservation biology issues and environmental education. She has been SCUBA diving for 20 years and has been on research expeditions to study the marine plants of the Atlantic, Caribbean, and eastern and western Pacific. Dr. McDermid has presented invited papers at international seaweed conferences and workshops and published articles on ecology, taxonomy, and teaching methods.
